Race, Politics and White Privilege

It's almost time.  November will be here before we know we will be picking our new president.

This has been one of the most important yet devicive elections in recent memory.  The attacks have been vicious and swift.  There have been accusations of the race card being played and rebuttles saying that the opposition is racist.

This is a free country and you can vote for whomever you like.  But if you cast your ballot and think that race has not played a part in this election, you are only fooling yourself.

There's one thing that particularly bothers me, and I have heard it on blogs over and over again, and it goes a little something like this:

"I'm not a racist, I'm just not voting for Obama because he's a Muslim."

Are you serious!?!?!?

I received a forward today from a friend.  It was regarding White privilege and the upcoming presidential election.  I was written by Tim Wise.  I enjoyed reading it and I am sharing it with you...

WHITE PRIVILEGE by Tim Wise

For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

White privilege is…

when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and
everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

White privilege is…

when you can call yourself a "fuckin' redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.

White privilege is…

when you can attend four different colleges in six  years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.

White privilege is…

when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller  than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested."

White privilege…

is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.

White privilege…

is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.

White privilege is…

being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a  9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful.

White privilege is…

being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist.

White privilege…

is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence I these same white women, and made them give your party a "second look."

White privilege…

is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.

White privilege…

is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and  who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates America.

White privilege…

is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a "trick question," while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.

White privilege is…

being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a "light" burden.

And finally, white privilege is…

the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole "change" thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.

White privilege is, in short, the problem.

  3. Hmmmmmmm. Not sure what to say about this. Don’t get me wrong, my son is half African American and I and his Dad teach him to be proud of who he is. I want him to grow up in a society that is free from racism OF ANY KIND. That would be epic now wouldn’t it? But that is a difficult prospect. Bigotry begets bigotry and although I might agree that many points raised here are what they are, the whole thing about what we need as an ailing country to heal with regard to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and the candidate that will even come remotely closest to be prepared to getting us a little closer to this state is being lost. In November I will be voting for Barack Obama NOT because he is black, not because I want to be involved in making history, but because he seems to be the lesser of the two evils. Politicians are high class whores who HAVE no other choice but to offer themselves up. Punto y aparte. It is impossible for them to ever “do the right thing” because there are so many interest groups offering this or withholding that. What they offer will help aid, what they withhold will make it difficult. Ay Dois mio. This is only my opinion the rest will stand where they stand.

  4. Your opinion is not only valid but true. The greater issue is that you represent a small minority of those that want a world without racism. Many of us, I would imagine the person who posted this blog is one as well, wishes that racism would go away tomorrow, most wish it could end right now. So for many of those who are being the object of the racism, it is a must to point out the covert language and systematic hypocrisy of those who wish to keep us divided as well as oppressed.

  5. *sigh* Thank you joyce...instead of circling this at this particular time, we should be concentraing on the issues we want addressed. There is a time and place for everything. There is an appropiate time for the message posted here, it just isn't now.

  7. Thank You Sonia for posting this...Political figures do have the White privilege. I am white and not afforded the same priviledges.
I will definately be voting for Obama/Biden. Not because he is of color, but because he is principled and intelligent. He chose to serve the country when he could have picked a fat cat career at a big legal firm. Biden has so very much experience, and I just can't wait for the debates.

  8. Hey wait a minute! I thought Obama was tan. You mean his momma was black, like his dad?
Me, I trace my ancestors back to Africa, just like the rest of my race. My race? The same as yours, if you're a human being.

That said, McCain and his Republicans, both 'black' and 'white' and etc. are the people who have politics which are a problem for working people. And you know what? They're going to win, if you guys aren't able to draw a bead on "The Bradley Effect". Racism IS a problem, even amongst Democrats and people who say that they are going to vote for Obama. Reducing this contest to identity politics and moral character will guarantee four more years of conservative political power in the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government. And, if that happens, watch out for more of the same: wars, pestilence and growing gaps between the ultra rich 1% of the population and the bottom 90% of us.

  9. Humans will continue to find reasons to hate and despise those who are different from oneself

Growing up I use to come up with all these ideas that I would take to my mother in the childish hopes that someday they would make a difference first I decided that if everyone would go blind that we would then not know who was what color, size, shape, race, whatever, My mother quickly showed me the error in that line of though, Then a few years later I decided that if we all married and had children with another race that in a billion years or so we would all be one race melded together. again my mother showed me the error in that line of thinking, The thing is that we are all different and those same differences should bring us together rather then pull us apart and for the most part over the years that has happened. WE still have those who don't think and can't tolerate the differences or use those same differences as a way to make them feel superior to another human being. the rest of us know that this is wrong. and frankly if we keep allowing it to happen were just as guilty as if we ourselves partake in such racial slurs. It isn't until we put away our fears and make a "change" can real change happen. Its often said that we all need to realize that we alone can't save the world, but we all know that we must do our small part as part of a larger force if change is to happen. Consider this your chance, your opportunity to make a real difference. Don't let this chance pass hoping for the next one or a sign or whatever it is that you need to see before you take a chance and make a real change do your part! ...LOL ok so perhaps you will read this and ask yourself what in the hell is she talking about, or you will read it and understand the ramblings of this mind. if it makes even one of you see the chance that you have been given to make a difference to be a part of something so in-tune with making a real change for the better of all mankind then I have been a success
Bottom line is we can't take away that desire for some to feel superior to another but we can make it less and less of an issue bridge those gaps and make the changes needed.

  10. @iamawobbly, Verrrry interesting comment. I find your line of thinking interesting. Unfortunately the continental divide will be ever present.

  11. well done...what gets me is...even gay people are going to vote for Palin...even is he would throw them all in a closet...and they can't understand how hypocritical that is...
I have asked many under 30 healthy men and women, who support the war, and are adamant how just it is, why they don't volunteer??? Especially when they claim how patriotic they are, and how the war is a fight for freedom...The silence is deafening....
I wonder if Palin would let her daughters go to Iraq to fight the fight of God....
I believe another politician wanted to punish the Jews too...I believe he came out of Germany...
If that is true, that Palin's husband wanted to secede from the US, why has that not been made more public?? Considering how they claim Obama is so against the US, for such trivial things..

It is amazing how many people are prejudiced, and claims they are not...I saw that is a friend recently, and she seems to think she is not...being a lesbian, you would think she would have some understanding, but, she is attractive and comes from an upper class family...so, i don't think she has had to deal with much...I may be the first who actually confronted her on her hypocrisy...and deleted her, as well...people who are sheltered, truly only go by what is on tv...
You know, people could say, the damage to Texas, was Gods way of punishing Bush and his supporters for their blindness...lol

  12. lol....I only say that because of what Palin has said about the Iraq war....

  15. That is an interesting statement. I only bring this up because conservatives who support the Republican party are always claiming God is smiting someone because of their supposed sins...for example Gay men getting AIDS because they are gay....the 2005 Tsunami was God's punishment for the inhabitants of South East Asia for not being Christian... two days after 9/11 Jerry Falwell took to the airwaves to proclaim that God had allowed the United States to be attacked because "the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians" had tried to transform America into a secular society.

I'm just saying that they are always the first ones to cast the proverbial stone...and I doubt they they are without sin.

  16. That is very interesting, I was talking to another friend today and we happened upon the same topic. Seems like our Patriot Act is alot like it started in Germany! Pretty soon it was up to the dictator who made all the decisions. hmmmm

  18. that's why i said it...and also because both Cheney and Bush are Texans..
Roex2...here is an interesting news bit...The Federal reserve bailed out AIG, and Merryl Lynch, and they are nationalized..it was Bush who ordered it...this is how communist countries run insurance and banks...and, Germany was like that, under a certain dictator..This means, the Federal Government own all those assets, and mortgages of those citizens who lost everything..
and not one is calling foul here...does it not go against the constitution or laws??

  19. This "gay" isn't voting for Palin, trust me. And Tina Fey on SNL was a scream Sat. night. I can still hear her say, "I can see Alaska from my front yard." Oh my God, I LMAO. Gotta have some humor in this f _ _ked up election. And yes, Tainababygirl, you hit the nail on the head on the stuff about what politicians really are. I agree 100%.

  20. by which you mean "identity politics" and/or "racism"?

    ReplyDelete
  21. The thing is that WE ARE ONE RACE right now. Racism is an ideology based on a pseudo-scientific claim. Check out the official statement by the American Anthropological Association here:
    http://www.aaanet.org/stmts/racepp.htm

Sure, we're different because we're individuals. Individuals are by definition, "different" from each other. What we have in common is class. Most of us are in the working class because we have to sell our skills and time to employers to make a living. Most of us don't have interests in common with the employing class. Why? Because in the market buyers and sellers don't have the same interests. Buyers want to get a lower price and sellers want a higher price for what they're selling. Workers are sellers in the labour market and the employing class are the buyers. No matter how much or how little melanin you have in your skin and eyes, most of you will always have class interests in common with with your fellow workers and in conflict with your bosses. Think about that when you even consider voting for a politician. Ask yourself this question: who benefits if this or that pollie is elected? Will it be you and your class or the employing class?

  22. I truly love that my small kid will really never remember a time that a person of any sex can't be president. Oh, we all grew up with that ANYONE CAN BECOME PRESIDENT thing, but it wasn't true. I also love that a name like Obama won't seem odd or ethic, just another name to him. We are all one race now, indeed.
